From Stewart Coggin, your Guide to World Soccer

This week I go back to basics and look at the rules of soccer for those who may want to develop their knowledge of the game or start playing. I provide an overview of the 17 laws of the game, look in depth at throw ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks, and the famous offside rule.

The Rules of Soccer
Each season FIFA publishes an extensive 'Laws of the Game' guide which describes the rules of soccer. Here is an overview of the 17 laws of the game.

Throw Ins, Goal Kicks, and Corner Kicks
It may seem simple when you know it, but the rules governing where the ball can go on and off the soccer field are certainly not obvious.

Offside
The law states that if a player is in an offside position when the ball is played to him or touched by a teammate, he may not become actively involved in the play.
